Gender Equality and Inclusion (GE&I) Practice at Universalia

The GE&I Practice aims to contribute to transformative processes that advance gender equality, the empowerment and agency of women and girls with an intersectional lens. The practice supports clients in bringing about enabling environments that respect and protect human rights, and foster opportunities for inclusion and participation in economic, social, and political life for all groups of women, girls, boys, men, LGBTQI+ members, indigenous peoples, racial, ethnic, and religious minorities, migrants, refugees and displaced persons, and persons with disabilities, so that the benefits of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are accessible to all.

The practice uses an intersectional lens in all its work contributing to the “no one left behind” imperative of the 2030 SDG Agenda and grounds its work in inclusive, rights-based, people-centered, sustainable and accountable approaches. We draw on a range of core frameworks and tools in a contextualized way, such as the Universalia Institutional and Organizational (IOA) model, the UN Gender Results Effectiveness Scale (GRES), different standards for mainstreaming gender equality, gender-based analysis +, systems thinking, multisectoral and multidisciplinary models.

Recent examples of projects include:

  • Development of Vision and Programme Document for the next phase of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation “Accelerating Change”
  • Support to develop the Monitoring and Reporting frameworks for the Gender at the Center Initiative (GCI) coordinated by the United Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) and UNESCO’s International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP)
  • Evaluation of UNFPA’s support to gender equality and women's empowerment across development and humanitarian settings (2010-2020)
  • Internal Review of UN Women’s Work on HIV/AIDS
  • Evaluation of the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Gender Equality Policy and Operational Strategy
  • Performance Measurement Framework Development for the Canadian NGO BridgeNorth
  • Study on the Implementation and Impact of Gender Based Analysis + (GBA+) by the City of Montreal
