The African Virtual University (AVU) is an e-learning body established to increase access to tertiary level education through the application of information and communications technologies. This 2004 assignment utilised Institutional and Organisational Assessment techniques to conduct a formative evaluation of the AVU. Universalia conducted the evaluation of the Effectiveness, efficiency, relevance and financial viability of the African Virtual University. Specific areas of the evaluation included: the effectiveness of the pedagogical model used, the adequacy of the technological model used given the African context, the financial viability of the AVU and its potential for increased financial autonomy, and the capacity building role of AVU towards its Partner Institutions in 18 African countries.
