Beement Alemayehu is a Consultant at Universalia with over 7 years of experience in international development, economics, evaluation, and research. At Universalia, he has provided advisory services in the field of monitoring and evaluation for various international organizations, governments, multilateral development banks, and international financial institutions. Beement has contributed to several evaluations including country programme, country strategic plan evaluation, cluster evaluation, project evaluation, strategic evaluation, ex post evaluation, real time evaluation, and evaluation of investment funds.

As co-lead of the Decent Work and Economic Growth Focal Area, Beement brings expertise in social protection, public financial management, economics, and labour. He has served as the Social Protection Expert for several UNICEF country programmes, including Indonesia (2021-2025), Rwanda (2018-2024), and Malawi (2019-2023). Other mandates such as the Evaluation of the Caribbean WFP Multi-Country Strategic Plan 2022-2026 and Real-Time Evaluation on UNICEF Multi-Country Response to Children on the Move in Latin America and the Caribbean cover social protection themes, including shock responsive social protection and minimum package of social services respectively.

He has worked with multilateral development banks, including the Caribbean Development Bank and the African Development Bank, as well as international financial institutions, including the World Bank. Through his work, Beement has evaluated investment funds, multi-donor trust funds, and investment portfolios, employing diverse methodologies, including cost-effectiveness, cost-efficiency, portfolio analysis, and performance assessments. Finally, he has experience in labour, including a past evaluation for the ILO regarding informal economies in South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire. Beement also works in quality assurance, including designing complex quantitative and qualitative review tools, conducting quality assurance reviews, as well as leading and contributing to (meta-)synthesis reports. 

Prior to joining Universalia, Beement worked with IHS Markit as a Country Risk Analyst covering Sub-Saharan Africa. At IHS Markit, Beement conducted sovereign risk analysis covering sub-Saharan African economies, employing a diverse range of methodologies. As a Research Associate at BCA Research, Beement provided investment research services for clients, including institutional investors, covering emerging and frontier markets across asset classes.

Beement holds an MSc in Development Management from the London School of Economics and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Development Studies from McGill University in Montreal. His academic training specializes in macroeconomics, development economics, international development, and management.
